AI vs. Your Financial Advisor: Why the Future of Wealth Management Needs Both

< Back to Insights

AI can analyze information, automate routine tasks, and make financial tools more powerful than ever. At JL Bainbridge, we see tremendous opportunity in using AI to make our team more efficient – but not to replace the personal relationships, experience, and human insights behind your financial plan. So, where does AI fit into wealth management and how does a professional advisor still matter?

AI Is Changing Investing. That’s Not Necessarily a Bad Thing.

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere. It can summarize thousands of pages of information, analyze large amounts of data, and answer financial questions. For wealth management firms, AI also offers something incredibly valuable: time. At JL Bainbridge, we believe technology should help make us more efficient so our team can spend more time doing what matters most – working with our clients.

AI and other technology can assist with recurring and administrative activities, organize and analyze information, and help professionals work through large amounts of data more efficiently. CFA Institute has similarly noted that AI’s ability to automate repetitive tasks may allow financial advisors to devote more of their time to client relationships.1

That is the opportunity we see: AI supporting the advisor, not replacing the advisor.

Where AI Can Be Incredibly Helpful

There are many areas where AI and technology can make wealth management more efficient. AI can help professionals:

  • Process and organize large amounts of information
  • Identify patterns and trends in financial data
  • Support investment research and analysis
  • Automate repetitive administrative activities
  • Summarize information more efficiently
  • Improve workflows and productivity

These capabilities can make a financial firm better and faster at certain tasks. And when technology gives our team time back, that time can be redirected towards being available when you need us.

AI vs. Your Financial Advisor: Why the Future of Wealth Management Needs Both

The Big Difference Between Information and Advice

AI can give you an answer while a financial advisor should understand why the question matters to you in the first place. Consider a seemingly straightforward question: “Can I afford to retire?”.

An AI tool can analyze numbers. But the real conversation may involve much more: Do you want to travel extensively? Help your children purchase homes? Pay for your grandchildren’s education? Leave a significant inheritance? Give more to charity? Maintain two homes? Retire completely or continue working because you enjoy it?

Those aren’t simply investment questions. They are life questions. The SEC and FINRA have also cautioned investors against relying solely on AI-generated information when making investment decisions, noting that AI-generated information can be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or even fabricated.2

Technology is a powerful tool. But a tool doesn’t know your family the way your advisor does.

When Human Guidance Matters Most

Some of the most important moments in a financial relationship happen when life doesn’t follow the spreadsheet. A spouse passes away. Markets fall sharply. You sell your business. You receive an inheritance. Your child needs help. You’re considering retirement earlier than planned. You’re worried and simply want to talk.

These situations require more than an algorithm. They require someone who understands your history, your family, your financial plan, and what matters most to you. They also require judgment and the ability to consider information in context and help you make a thoughtful decision rather than an emotional one.

As CFA Institute has observed, even as technology becomes more sophisticated, human skills such as communication, empathy, and relationship-building are becoming more important in wealth management.3

The Best of Both Worlds

At JL Bainbridge, we don’t view the future as AI versus financial advisors. We believe the better model is AI plus experienced financial professionals. We’ll continue exploring technology that can make our firm more efficient, strengthen our analysis, and improve the experience we provide. But our clients should also know what isn’t changing:

  • You’ll still be able to call us.
  • You’ll still have people who know you and your family.
  • You’ll still have professionals responsible for understanding your goals, answering your questions, and helping you navigate important financial decisions.
  • We’ll still be here when the answer requires something AI cannot provide: perspective, judgment, experience, and a real conversation.

Technology will continue to change. Our commitment to serving our clients personally will not.
